Welcome to Ledyard Preschool

September 2018

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! A tremendous amount of hard work went into preparing for another productive year. Custodians worked throughout the summer to clean and ready the schools. Teachers and support staff spent hours preparing materials and reviewing data.  Secretaries and office staff busily registered new students and organized materials.

August 30 marked the first day of school for 579 students at GFS/JWL. Teachers have begun to introduce routines and started building a sense of community within their classrooms and in common areas such as hallways, playgrounds, and the lunchroom.  We are excited to welcome 73 kindergarteners and 85 students to the Pre-K program. Forty-six new students in grades 1-6 have registered over the summer months. We also have lots of new staff members. We are thrilled to welcome them to the GFS/JWL learning community!

This year we are implementing PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support). It is a school-wide framework that supports a culture in which all students achieve important social and learning goals by having positive reinforcement and consistent behavioral expectations.

Our Behavior Purpose Statement is: Our school is a connected learning community where we are empowered to be respectful, responsible, kind, and safe.

You will see PAWS in our school. It stands for:

Please be respectful

                 Always be responsible

We are kind

Safety first

We know that when good behavior and good teaching come together, students will benefit and excel in their learning. We believe that when a team of caring adults is consistently supporting all students to practice positive behavior, we will build a school community where all students can grow and succeed. A special PBIS link will be added to the school's website in the next few weeks!

The home/school connection is a vital part of a child’s education.  One habit for parents and caregivers to establish is checking your child’s backpack daily.  Forms and information are often sent home along with homework and completed work. Please read, sign, and return necessary forms in a timely fashion.  We also use technology to share information. We have a school website and use #gfsjwl on Twitter. The district has an app called Ledyard Public Schools which you can download onto your favorite devices.  I would encourage you to stay connected and seek opportunities to be involved. You are also invited to join the PTO Facebook page which is a closed group. Although the PTO Facebook page is helpful, it is always a good idea to check the main sites and/or contact the office with personalized or highly-specific questions.

Speaking of being involved, we have the potential to have a very strong PTO again this year.  There are numerous opportunities for parents to be involved both during the school day and for a variety of events and projects. I encourage you to stop by the PTO booth at Open House to get more information.  Open House at GFS will be held on September 13 and JWL will hold its Open House on September 18. Details will be shared soon.

I look forward to getting to know each student and working collaboratively with parents and staff members to ensure that each child has a successful year.  My door is always open. I have an office in each of the buildings. Please do not hesitate to email me at ahogsten@ledyard.net  or call the school office.

Sincerely,

Anne Hogsten

Principal
